Directions to KLMBH #217, 28th Oct. 2012 @ Kg Gerachi Jaya aka “This-Looks-Like-Hell”

About three years ago, Scott (TDF) and Ying How were cycling on road up to Fraser’s Hill when they spied an Orang Asli village nestled on top of the hills above the Sungai Selangor Dam. Looking at the extreme terrain, Scott wistfully said that he would like to set a Bash there. Fast forward to 2012, 8 recces and another day spent refurbishing an old pipe trail, they are now able to bring you a new Bash site for the KLMBH.

IMPORTANT: The Bash site is located in very steep and hilly terrain. This ride is NOT recommended for young children nor unfit riders. You will need strong legs, a good dose of humour and enjoy a more raw environment. You might even mistake this place as hell, but we call it Shangri-La.

The Long Ride - 21km

This ride is a circuit from Kg Gerachi to Kg Kolam Air and back on road via KKB. Total ascent is a measly 800m. There is one major hill(Hill Nos 2) to challenge the riders.

The Short Ride - 6.5km

Riders on this ride will use the road to climb up to Kampung Gerachi, do a short loop and come back down via Hill Nos 2. The ride is short but the road ride up to Kg Gerachi is steep.

Directions

Driving at regulation speed, it takes us about 75mn from KL to the Bash site. Total drive distance is about 70km. You need to get onto the North South Highway and drive Northwards towards Rawang. Exit: Rawang.

  1. Zero set your trip meter at Rawang Toll Rawang

  2. 300m - traffic lights, turn right and head towards Rawang town

  3. 3.8km - traffic lights, continue straight

  4. 4.2km - roundabout. Take 3 o’clock

  5. 4.3km - traffic lights. Turn right

  6. 10.6km - Serendah. Continue straight

  7. 18.2km - Antara Gapi. Continue straight

  8. 22.3km - Ulu Yam traffic lights. Continue straight

  9. 27.4km - Rasa. Continue straight

  10. 28.4km - Sign board to KKB. Turn right into Jalan Ampang Pecah

  11. Turn right onto Jalan Ampang Pecah

  12. 36.5km - traffic lights at KKB. Turn right and head towards Fraser’s Hill

  13. 40km - Turn left to Kampung Gerachi Jaya. Continue straight for a kilometer until you see the Bash site

On the way back, we recommend using the Rasa – Beruntung exit or to go via Batang Kali – Batu Dam – Batu Caves as traffic is heavy in Rawang in the afternoon.

The Cultural Note (something to think about when pushing the bike uphill…) - About the Sungai Selangor Dam

The Sungai Selangor Dam is a 110m high rockfill dam founded on solid granite bedrock. The rockfill type of dam is similar to the Kenyir Dam in Terengganu (155 m), Temenggor Dam in Perak (127m), Ahning Dam in Kedah (74m,), Batang Ai Dam in Sarawak (85m) and Pedu Dam in Kedah (61m).

It is situated at the narrow gorge on massive granite bedrock just downstream of the confluence of Sungai Selangor and Sungai Gerachi. Relocation and resettlement of two (2) Orang Asli villages (comprising 84 families). The Orang Asli villages were relocated and resettled at a cost of RM1 million. The two communities (Kg Gerachi and Kg Pertak) were provided with new homes and community facilities and the consortium planted oil palm to replace their crop trees.

At full supply level, the inundated area is 600 ha, making it the dam with the largest storage capacity relative to the area inundated. Dam impoundment commenced on April 25, 2003 and reached its full supply level which is 220 m (above sea leave) with a total storage capacity of 230 million cubic metres on 13 April 2004.

The dam is designed as a regulating dam. During heavy rains, excess water from the catchment upstream is stored in the reservoir within the dam. On dry days when water level at the intakes is low, water is released into the river.
